US Bulldozing Afghanistan

Few in the locavore movement realize it but the most reliable models for sustainable living are not found on organic farms in Europe, but in Afghanistan. A majority of its 30 million citizens still grow and process most of the food they consume organically, though they are not familiar with the term. Indeed, Afghanistan is commendable for it's underdevelopment; western influence has had little chance to corrupt the environment in the name of progress.

Tragic then, that the United States is using much of its aid to transform this agrarian society into a consumer-oriented, mechanized, fossil-fuel-based economy, instead of the traditional, labor-intensive agricultural system which has existed for thousands of years. In fact, at the base of most growth dependent economic systems is the concept of increased mechanization of agriculture, an assumption which is increasingly being criticized by consumers and environmentalists alike. The argument is that increased mechanization leads to less attention to the well-being of crops, necessitating pesticides and industrial machinery, neither of which are in heavy use in pre-industrial Afghanistan.Shop a wide selection of billabong outlet products in the evo shop.

Aside from that, the US government seems bent on developing Afghanistan based on models even the US is attempting to move away from. A 2004 Department of Energy study detailed rich renewable energy resources that could be used to build small scale wind and solar powered systems to generate electricity and solar thermal devices for boiling water and cooking.Knowing that, the US has invested hundreds of millions of dollars to build hulking diesel generators and exploit the country's oil, gas and coal reserves. The argument is that oil drilling provides jobs, but most of them are unskilled, low-wage, temporary jobs while all of the profits flow overseas or to warlords and government officials. Our Polymax RUBBER SHEET range includes all commercial and specialist
Taxpayer dollars are also funding energy-inefficient construction projects. These projects require adherence to western-style building codes, which do not permit the construction of traditional structures built with cob ¡ª a mixture of mud,The name "magic cube" is not unique. sand, clay and chopped straw. Cob is durable, elegant, super-insulated, and earthquake-resistant. They are cooler in summer and warmer in winter than cinder-block buildings. In many places, people still live in cob houses built more than 400 years ago.

Along with a pipeline to carry natural gas from Central Asia, the United States is also helping to fund a US-style power grid that will force Afghanistan to purchase the bulk of its electricity. Furthermore, the grid only serves the cities, though most of Afghanistan's population is rural. What to consider before you buy oil painting supplies. If the US continues to dismiss Afghans' centuries of experience in sustainability, future generations of rural Afghans will be forced to watch as we destroy their land without improving their lives. And it is this generation that will have to decide whether they support or oppose the future enemies of America.
