The last thing the City of London wants to do is broadcast to the province, to the nation, to the international community is that we aren’t open for business,” Van Meerbergen said. “That is what happens when we move motions, God forbid if we ever passed a motion like that, that sends out all the wrong messages, anti-business, anti-jobs.”
Using Lamko as an example, Van Meerbergen said CETA would help the business grow by opening up new markets in which to sell its products. In addition, Van Meerbergen also said he applauds any government that wants to lower trade barriers and create new opportunities.
“This is the classic way to create jobs, by lowering trade barriers. We are a trading nation,” Van Meerbergen said. “We are convinced that with better opportunities in Europe we can increase our production, therefore hire more people, therefore create jobs. That is how it is done.”
Ed Holder, London-West MP and a member of the standing committee on international trade, said he believes Canadians have been given a great deal of misinformation around CETA. The most significant misconception, Holder said, is that the Harper government would enter into any kind of agreement that put Canadians at a disadvantage.
“There is no agreement that we will support that isn’t in the interest of Canada, first and foremost. It is easy to become protectionist and isolationist, but that hasn’t been Canada’s history,” Holder said. “We are will soon go into the softer negotiations around some of the touchier points. But we will always do that in terms of protecting Canadian interests.”
The information event at Lamko did draw criticism from those who have long spoken out against CETA. Patti Dalton, president of the London and District Labour Council, said she believes the nationwide information sessions were nothing more than spin doctoring by the Conservatives.
“This is a blatant public relations attempt to avoid the massive criticism from labour and social organizations all over Canada which have challenged the government to come clean on the dangers of this trade deal which threatens the rights of municipalities to make decisions based on the best results for local communities,” Dalton said. “Speaking at us is not speaking with us and if Minister Lisa Raitt really wanted our input she would have had a town hall meeting not this sham of democracy.”

Injection gets groove back
Here’s a message from people who sell injection molding machines: The joy is back.
Sales have increased for two years in a row, after a steady 10-year decline. That should continue in 2012. The U.S. injection press market is nearing pre-recessionary levels — but it’s not there yet — according to most machinery executives interviewed for this story.
“Right now it’s really fun again in this business. There is life going on again, and people are ordering machines,” said Friedrich Kanz, president of Arburg Inc. of Newington, Conn.
This year, the U.S. market continued its comeback from the dark days of 2009. The story is told in numbers from the Society of the Plastics Industry Inc. in Washington. SPI projects 2,400 U.S. shipments in 2011. That would be an increase of about 15 percent from 2,111 in 2010, which was a big jump of 64 percent from 2009 — when just 1,285 presses were shipped.
Many machinery executives credit a resurgent automotive industry for many of the 300-or-so extra presses sold this year. The reason: a slew of new models and the recession-driven culling of weaker molders. Kanz thinks a “normal” U.S. injection press market can reach 2,500-3,000. Press sales fell below the landmark 3,000 level in 2007. A return to 3,000 would give the industry a psychological boost.
And the automotive picture should get steadily brighter, according to a presentation in October at the Fakuma trade show in Friedrichshafen, Germany, by Michael Taylor, SPI’s senior director of international trade. Citing forecasts from CSM Worldwide, he said North American automotive capacity utilization could go above 90 percent in 2013.
That would spark even more demand for equipment. And machinery officials want President Obama and Congress to extend the accelerated depreciation tax break into 2012, since it helped plastics processors buy machines and modernize this year.
“Automotive is a big driver on the revenue side. They’re the ones that buy all the large-tonnage machines,” said Mark Sankovitch, president of Engel Machinery Inc. in York, Pa.
David Bernardi of Ube Machinery Inc. said there are still plenty of aging presses running in U.S. plastics factories.
“From what I see, we’re still looking at pent-up demand. We’re looking at situations on the replacement side. The fleet is still ridiculously ancient, and there are projects for new models of cars,” Bernardi said.

Manufacturing is poised for a major upturn if the U.S. economy begins to hit on all cylinders, he added.
With unemployment stuck at 9 percent, economists are debating how to create jobs. Don’t look to the factory floor, where automated machinery is advancing rapidly, according to Wood.

“If you watch the news and read the paper, it’s gloom and doom, and we’re not seeing that in machinery,” said Dave Lawrence, president of worldwide plastics machinery for injection, extrusion and mold technologies.
“I think the bulk of the pent-up demand occurred in 2010. What we’re seeing right now are replacements, improving technology, improving energy efficiency and in some cases, expanding capacity,” Lawrence said.

Eagle Scout project benefits Longview Community Ministries
When 15-year-old Keegan Allen was looking for a project to become an Eagle Scout, he wanted to do something that would make a difference in the community.
“My mom (Amy Allen) informed me that Longview Community Ministries was moving. She is a board member. I appreciate all this ministry does for the community and was honored to be a part of helping. Mom referred me to Mrs. Donna Sharp who pitched me the project idea.”
The idea was for Keegan to remove the flooring in the new location, which is the former American Classifieds location on Second Street.
It turned out to be a much bigger job than the 10th-grader anticipated.
“Due to the nature of the classifieds company's work, the floor was raised in a room so that wires could be ran underneath,” Keegan said. “There are three doors that lead to this room from the office spaces adjacent to it. When LCM bought the space, the wires where no longer of any use. Therefore, the floor being raised wasn’t necessary any longer either. My project included removal of the actual tiles that made up the floor itself.”
His cool demeanor in explaining the work that was necessary did not reflect the level of anxiety his mother said she heard in his voice when he realized what was before him.
“He called, and was like, ‘Mom, there’s another floor under this floor, and wires everywhere,When CD Wholesale Glass Mixed Mosaics For Kitchen first came out’ ” Amy Allen told other members of the LCM board.

Anthropology students dig up past at Michigan State University

She scraped up a thin layer of yellow-orange sand and deposited it in a bucket that fellow student Nicholas Haney sifted through a coarse screen.
The sand passed through easily. Wearing thick gray suede gloves, Haney sorted the lumps left behind.
Rocks.
Sticks.
No significant archaeological finds - this time.

Photo show reveals painful world of drugs
The lives of former drug addicts are displayed through the lens of photographer Pham Hoai Thanh in an exhibition entitled Face-to-Face with Drugs which opened yesterday in Ha Noi.
"I objectively reported daily lives of former drug addicts who I met," Thanh said.The name "magic cube" is not unique. "I was very moved when I witnessed the discrimination and challenges they faced in their lives."
Thanh spent a year working with 50 people who had overcome or still used illegal substances.We specialize in providing third party merchant account.

The five-day exhibition marks International Drugs Prevention Day on June 25. It has been organised by the Centre for Supporting Community Development Initiatives and sponsored by the US Agency for International Development.
This is the first photo show on the lives of drug users in Viet Nam and the third exhibition of Thanh about HIV and drug prevention.
