Courthouse security undergoing new scrutiny

Attorney Thomas W. Teixeira started thinking about courthouse security while sitting in a Norwich courtroom during a recent murder trial.

Two factions of young people were watching the case, which involved local residents with colorful street names, and the tension was palpable. Teixeira wondered how he would escape the second-floor courtroom if violence erupted.

It was around the same time that 20 children and six adults were shot and killed by a lone gunman at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, raising questions about security in all public buildings.

Teixeira got to thinking about whether judicial marshals, who carry only a baton and pepper spray, are adequately equipped to keep the state's courthouses safe.

He wrote a letter calling on the Judicial Branch to arm at least one marshal in each state courthouse and to provide training and guns to those who transport prisoners.

In Hartford, top judicial officials said they were already reviewing existing security policies and procedures.

"Clearly it was precipitated in large part by the Sandy Hook tragedy," Judge Patrick L. Carroll III, the state's deputy chief court administrator, said in a recent phone interview.

Security at the state's 42 courts and 30 other offices has been a priority for Chief Justice Chase Rodgers since she was sworn in nearly six years ago, according to Carroll.

"She has said it's the one thing that keeps her awake at night," he said.

That was before Monday's news reports that a man involved in a custody dispute walked into the public lobby of a Wilmington, Del., courthouse and opened fire, killing his ex-wife and one other person. The man exchanged gunfire with police, then shot himself. According to reports, the Delaware state court system uses armed police officers, roaming court bailiffs and a police dog to protect the 12-story courthouse.

Back in Connecticut, all security measures are on the table for discussion and review, including arming some of the state's judicial marshals, Carroll said. The marshals have not had guns since the Judicial Branch assumed the duties of the high sheriffs in 2000.

"We've talked about that in the past," Carroll said. "Obviously times change, needs change, and it's something we are going to consider."

Teixeira hesitated to call attention to what he considers weaknesses in courthouse security but said he decided to make his letter public because he would feel terrible if something happened and he had said nothing.

"Many want to place an armed officer in every school to prevent the extremely rare occurrence when a violent, unstable person approaches or enters a school building," he wrote. "Yet every day across this state, violent, unstable people line up in numbers to enter our courthouses. While Carroll said he would like to have a marshal stationed in every courtroom, including those where family and civil cases are heard, there are not enough marshals for that. Criminal courtrooms, lockup areas and prisoner transportation take priority, he said.

The Office of Policy and Management initially recommended that there be 1,080 judicial marshals statewide, but funded only 920, according to D'Alesio.

"With the budget the way it is, we feel the optimal number for us is 820," he said. "We're at 741 right now, including a class in session."

New marshals complete a 14-week training program covering topics such as management of aggressive behavior, CPR and crisis intervention, before they are accredited, D'Alesio said. They all undergo semi-annual training.

Superior Court Judge Kevin P. McMahon said he would feel better if there were armed marshals or former police officers in courthouses, provided they were well-trained.

"Do I think it's urgent? No," he said. "But would we kick ourselves if we didn't do something and something happened? Yes."

McMahon, who has presided over criminal cases for 20 years, says at some point in every courtroom he has ever sat in, he has thought, "How would I get out of here if something happened?"

In 2003, McMahon was presiding over a sexual assault trial in New London when a frustrated juror burst into a courtroom and shouted, "Don't shoot! I've got a gun." People fled the courtroom in panic. Marshals detained the man, who was not armed, and McMahon declared a mistrial.

So-called "panic buttons" that summon marshals are placed strategically in courthouses, but some wonder whether unarmed marshals would be able to respond appropriately to a shooting.

"If you hear shots fired and you're a marshal, are you going to go running in there to get yourself shot?" McMahon asked.

State police have jurisdiction over courthouses, and in the event troopers are not nearby, local departments may be called as backup.

"We have a good relationship with the Connecticut State Police, and when we know we have a potentially volatile situation, the chief judicial marshal will contact them and let them know," Carroll said.

Di Garut, sejumlah warga mengeluh karena tidak kunjung menerima e-KTP. Padahal, data diri mereka telah direkam untuk pembuatan e-KTP tahun lalu. Sejumlah warga pun mengeluhkan kesalahan peneraan data pada e-KTP yang diterimanya.

Wildan Fadillah (25), warga Kampung Sanding, Kelurahan Muarasanding, Kecamatan Garutkota, mengaku telah melakukan perekaman data e-KTP Oktober 2012. Wildan dijanjikan akan menerima e-KTP pada Desember 2012.

"Tapi sampai Februari ini e-KTP belum saya terima. Padahal, ibu dan kakak saya sudah menerima e-KTP, Januari 2013. Kenapa tidak bareng menerimanya. Padahal difotonya juga bareng," kata Wildan saat ditemui di rumahnya, Rabu (13/2).

Hal itu pun dialami istri Wildan, Mutia Dwi (23), yang masih tercatat sebagai warga Kampung Nagrakkulon, Desa Mangkurakyat, Kecamatan Cilawu. Mutia belum menerima e-KTP miliknya walaupun telah direkam datanya pada April 2012.

"Ada yang salah nama, alamat, tanggal lahir, tertukar fotonya, bahkan ada yang salah agama. Kami baru bisa mengumpulkannya karena belum ada alat untuk merevisinya. Perintahnya pun belum jelas," kata Nurdin.

Kerusakan pun dialami e-KTP milik Nurdin. Saat dimasukkan ke dalam smartcard, kata Nurdin, e-KTP miliknya tidak bisa memunculkan data dirinya. Sedangkan, penyerahan e-KTP kepada warga masih dalam proses sampai akhir Oktober 2013.

Ketua Badan Permusyawaratan Desa (BPD) Cileunyi Wetan, Ahmad Sobar, membantah bahwa pengambilan dan pengaktifan e-KTP dipungut biaya. "Tidak ada dasar dari pemerintah untuk memungut biaya kepada warga yang akan mengatifkan e-KTP dan membuat e-KTP. Semuanya itu gratis," ujar Ahmad kemarin.

Di Ciamis, sejak dicanangkan perekaman e-KTP pada 28 Oktober 2011 sampai Rabu (13/2) tercatat 1.046.724 warga yang sudah melakukan perekaman. Sebanyak 1.003.362 lembar e-KTP sudah dicetak. Hasil penyortiran, ditemukan 2.746 e-KTP yang rusak dan sudah dikembalikan ke Kemendagri, tapi belum ada penggantinya.

Sekdis Dinas Kependudukan dan Catatan Sipil Ciamis, Drs Hendar Suhendar, mengatakan, 102.704 lembar e-KTP yang belum diambil pemiliknya adalah e-KTP hasil perekaman massal sampai 31 April 2012 lalu. E-KTP yang belum diambil tersebut sudah didistribusikan ke kantor desa/kelurahan atau ada yang masih disimpan di kantor kecamatan.

University, for most people, is their first real taste of independence and being in control of oneself. It is exciting, yet terrifying. So when things go wrong, it is so easy just to blame yourself and isolate yourself which is when the loneliness kicks in. Then when people ask what’s wrong and the answer is “I feel lonely”, it can be difficult to explain. These pressures can become so overwhelming that it is easy to get swallowed up in them. Sometimes they can be dealt with and other times you may just want to hide away. It’s not a feeling that can be ignored, because it can spread and consume even more of your life.

So how do you deal with a feeling that is so difficult to explain? It is tough, but everyone goes through it at some point; everyone will feel either lonely or homesick in some way whilst they are university. This means they can sympathise, and so it’s best just to explain as much as is possible and talk it out, no matter how ridiculous or unfounded the feelings may seem. There are multitudes of reasons why people can feel lonely outside of the obvious ones of relationships and friends. A person can have all the friends in the world, but still feel like something is missing.

Talking about it helps to identify what it is that is missing, or at the very least it can be cathartic and release some of the pent-up stress. Smaller, simpler ways can also be found. Sometimes, it is the little things that make the difference: going for a run, watching a film, listening to music or pretty much anything you enjoy. I regret this flattening of online learning into a simple binary of ‘politically and financially motivated greed’ on the one hand and ‘an opportunity to find out more about learning’ on the other. Some of both in different situations can be true.

It's always hard to be able to hold two complex and even contradictory ideas in one's mind at once but, well, that's life. Both can be true. And there is so much to be gained from a sustained conversation on every side and from each side's learning from the other, without assuming the other side is being naive or callous in its concerns.

Sellafield clean-up costs at ￡67.5bn

The total cost of cleaning up the legacy of nuclear waste at Sellafield now stands at ￡67.5 billion and it could escalate further if the British taxpayer is left to hold all the risk in contracts, a powerful House of Commons committee has warned.

“Over several decades, successive governments have been guilty of failing to tackle issues on the site, allowing an enormous nuclear legacy to build up,” the Commons Public Accounts Committee said today.

The UK Nuclear Decommissioning Authority was set up 2005 to tackle Sellafield’s "extraordinary accumulation of hazardous waste, much of it stored in outdated nuclear facilities".

Since then it has brought in international contractors to help the plant’s operators, Sellafield Ltd.

However, MPs complained: “Deadlines for cleaning up Sellafield have been missed, while total lifetime costs for decommissioning the site continue to rise each year and now stand at ￡67.5 billion.

“It is essential that the authority brings a real sense of urgency to its oversight of Sellafield so that the timetable for reducing risks does not slip further and costs do not continue to escalate year on year,” said the Public Accounts Committee, in a report published this morning.

User equipment can quickly obtain its approximate positioning by looking up its serving cell’s identity and its corresponding location information. This is commonly referred to as the “CID” method. While straightforward, this approach is ineffective when user equipment is operating in cells with large coverage area,I thought it would be fun to show you the inspiration behind the broken china-mosaics. particularly in rural areas where cells typically are miles in radius. To provide more granular location information, 3GPP Release 9 defined an “Enhanced‐Cell ID” positioning method where a device uses CID information in conjunction with the estimated distance to its serving LTE base station, or ENodeB, based on the detected radio signal’s round trip time, reference signal received power, and/or angle of arrival. Using all of this information together would allow a device to identify its position relative to the serving ENodeB and infer its precise geographical coordinates accordingly. Observed time difference of arrival is a positioning method that uses reference signals from three or more time‐synchronized adjacent ENodeBs to calculate a device’s position based on the received signal time difference. Each measurement of a pair of downlink transmission describes a line of constant difference (hyperbola) where a device may reside. By measuring a minimum of two pairs of downlink transmission (involving a minimum of three ENodeBs), a device’s precise point of location can be identified.

In Release 9, measuring time difference of arrival is only applicable for the downlink signal since the device’s uplink transmit power is limited and may not reach multiple DNodeBs. However, uplink time difference of arrival positioning method has been adopted in Release 11 to utilize uplink sounding reference signals’ time of arrival differences at different ENodeBs.How cheaply can I build a solar power systems?

Plan to stay in Blanco and come back to the park in the evening for the Stars in the Park program at 5:30 p.m. This program begins with an overview of space using Stellarium, a real-time computer generated view of the heavens. After a sneak peak of what will be shining, you can step outside to amateur astronomers, each with their telescopes trained to a different planet, star or galaxy. A Pennsylvania native who came to Culpeper at age 3, Joe Weld joined the Charlottesville NAPA store part-time while a student at the University of Virginia back when the business was located on 10th Street.

He studied finance and business at UVa. After college, Weld returned to Culpeper and worked in an independent auto parts store until purchasing the NAPA store there.

Upon joining his father in the business last month, Alex Weld said he sent out about 740 welcome letters to customers in the system and he's been spending lots of time visiting the garages and shops they serve.

"I've spent the last two weeks driving around, and I only barely scratched the surface," he said.

"In Culpeper, we have a lot of walk-in business. Here ... mostly it's wholesale where we deliver to the garages and the shops and then they in turn sell to the end user," Joe Weld said.

Despite the ownership and location changes, there are still plenty of longtime loyal customers. The men said some customers have been visiting the Charlottesville store since the mid-1970s.

Alex Weld, too, has a lengthy connection to the auto parts business.

At age 5, "We'd put a milk crate behind the counter so he could see over the counter and help people," Joe Weld said, adding that not only was it cute,A ridiculously low price on this All-Purpose solar lantern by Gordon. but even at that age, he demonstrated good customer service skills. "Alex is a real people person," he added.

However, the auto parts industry isn't where the younger Weld got his professional start. A George Mason University graduate who studied accounting, he worked as a tax accountant for 15 years, but decided to move on from that job and join his father at work, a decision he characterized as tough but exciting.

"I understand now what dad went through when he stepped out and purchased the [Culpeper] NAPA in '88," he said. "It was very nerve racking."

Established nearly 90 years ago as the National Automotive Parts Association, today NAPA has about 6,100 stores nationwide. Together, both local stores employ nearly 40 people. About 25 work at the Charlottesville location on Harris Street and about 15 at the Culpeper location. "I think availability of parts is a big reason NAPA has been so successful," Joe Weld said. "We find the garages want the parts now. They don't want to hear, 'we can order that for you and have it tomorrow.' They're going to buy from the people who have it now."

The Next War With Apps and GPS

In the days before Elie was called to Operation Pillar of Defense, he showed me an iPhone application he had found on the Internet. It was called “Color Red” – the same name used to indicate an incoming missile. And what it did – was alert you that a missile had been fired from Gaza and tell you how many seconds you had before impact. It even had a stop watch which you could start and then time yourself as you ran. Sick humor…

Elie called a short while ago – he found another application – it’s called, “The Next War” and what it does is tell you where the nearest bomb shelter is – based on your location as identified by GPS. Wonderful. He thought it was hysterical. He was particularly amused that according to this application, the nearest bomb shelter to where he was – working as a security guard in the mall in Maale Adumim – is a 40 minute drive to the southern part of Jerusalem (ignoring the bomb shelter that is in the mall in Maale Adumim and every other bomb shelter between us and Jerusalem). What does it say about us that we create programs to measure how fast we can run and where we can seek shelter? I actually think it shows how well we are adapting. No, I really doubt that either of these applications would be used in a real war. Who has time to pull out your phone, open the application and then consult it as you run for the 15 seconds to one minute it takes for the missile to arrive?

Although we haven't been able to get behind the wheel of a new 2013 Ram HD, we believe the new exhaust brake, called Smart Brake, on the newly up-rated Cummins turbodiesel is worth a closer look.

The new exhaust brake still uses the same sliding-nozzle turbine design, but now it's controlled by a more sophisticated software mapping program that effectively allows for three different settings. They're all controlled by a single button on the lower switch panel of the new center stack on all 2013 Ram HD models. We're hopeful Ram will at some point move the important activation button to a more prominent location because it looks like it might be somewhat difficult to find, buried along two rows of switches. Naturally, some packages will have fewer buttons than others, but it would make more sense to have this switch on the stickshift or column shifter.

As we understand it, the setup still uses a single button (with the carryover icon designating its purpose) that will first activate an Auto mode. As you might have anticipated, the third position for the new "two-step" exhaust brake is the Off position. A bungled IPO left Facebook's relationship with Wall Street strained. But Facebook’s courtship with the entertainment industry seemed to be on solid ground, until recently. Last fall, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg railed against SOPA, the now-defunct entertainment industry-backed legislation designed to strengthen copyright laws. Zuckerburg then doubled-down, altering Facebook’s news feed algorithm. The change required film and TV studios to make more ad buys on Facebook, and now executives aren't sure the ads are worth the money.

On the front lines of California’s current "War of the Roses" is Facebook's Hollywood liason Kay Madati, who sat down with Paresh Dave to discuss the evolving relationship with the entertainment industry.

Based out of Facebook's office in Playa Vista, Madati leads a team that helps entertainment companies promote shows and films on Facebook. He's also serving this spring as the Media, Economics and Entrepreneurship Executive-in-Residence at USC's Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism.

Madati: The reality is, amongst your friends, it’s already happening. It’s just the entire world can’t see that conversation. You and your 230 friends are probably updating, real-time in and around the show, posting moments, even going to the Golden Globes page and posting a picture. If you have no access to see that, you don’t believe it’s happening on the platform.

We’re the largest watercooler in the world. People on a regular basis leverage the platform to do what they do in the offline spaces, to talk to the people they care about, to follow the people and brands that influence them. And I don’t think that kind of behavior goes away. I think that kind of behavior is accelerating,wind turbine if you believe Zuck’s law, which kind of says people share twice as much information every year, year over year. I think you’re going to see more of this discovery of information through your friends.

The business model’s a little bit different. A television network is very interested in inviting eyeballs to actually watch on television. Netflix or Hulu+ is more interested in acquiring more subscribers, (and) not as concerned about appointment viewing or how much you watch.

I imagine the goals there are to surface the fact that I’m using this service on Facebook with my friends, so that they might actually go and subscribe. It’s actually a heavier lift than saying, ‘This is on tonight, go and turn on your television.’ This one requires you to put in your credit card information. I wasn’t a Netflix user until 200 of my friends kept posting about Downton Abbey, and Netflix was the only that had season one and season two, so I joined. In the last 30 days, it’s changed a lot of things in my house.

...Even though they're dealing with entertainment content, Netflix wouldn’t fall under my responsibility day-to-day. We’re much much more interested in helping traditional business models leverage new ways to drive engagement and awareness for their content and drive back to their core monetization platform.

Edgar Allan Poe meets Fawlty Towers

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to have dinner at Hotel St. Germain — you know, the Queen Anne-style mansion on Maple Avenue with the graceful rounded porch, debonair circular drive and French and American flags flying out front?

Built as a private residence for John Patrick Murphy in 1906 on what was once known as “Millionaires’ Row,” the three-story house was purchased by its current owner, Claire Heymann, in 1989. Heymann, a native of Louisiana whose mother was an antiques dealer, opened her seven-suite hotel two years later, decorating it with pieces culled from her mother’s collection of furnishings from France and New Orleans.

Before long, it became known not just as an elegant lodging where Dallasites could escape for a special weekend without leaving town, but also as one of the city’s finest restaurants. Reviews over the years, crowned with as many as 41/2 stars, were peppered liberally with words like exquisite, sumptuous and seamless.Nitrogen Controller and Digital dry cabinet with good quality.

In 2008, a three-star review from then-restaurant critic Bill Addison was more reticent. But two years later, the hotel joined the exclusive Relais and Chateaux international group of hotels, whose members include L’Espérance, Troisgros and other temples of gastronomy in France. American Relais and Chateaux properties include Meadowood and Auberge du Soleil in Napa Valley, Calif., the Inn at Little Washington, New York’s Surrey Hotel (whose dining room is Cafe Boulud) and the Inn at Dos Brisas in Washington, Texas.

None of that prepared me for the strange welcome — or lack thereof — I received at Hotel St.wind turbine Germain on a Friday evening last October.

No one appeared after I drove up the circular drive. Unsure of what to do with the car, I left it there and entered the hotel, where I was greeted by … not a soul. After an uncomfortable wait,Which Air purifier is right for you? I hit the bell on the reception desk, then covered it quickly, embarrassed it was so loud. Still no one appeared. At last, one white-gloved staffer appeared from the top of the stairs, and another came from the direction of the dining room. “Wait in the library,” I was told, and both disappeared. I found the library, a cozy, antique-filled room with a fire in the hearth, and before too long the white- gloved gentleman appeared, offering to bring a drink.

“What kind of sparkling wine do you have by the glass?” I asked.

“We don’t have sparkling wine,” he said firmly. “We have Champagne. Well, actually, it’s Champagne from California — Roederer Estate. So I guess that’s a sparkling wine.”

My three friends arrived, and we obediently sipped our bubbly till 8:20 p.m.; our reservation was for 8. The white-gloved gentleman seemed to be avoiding the subject of our table.

And we’d had to jump through hoops to secure it. You must reserve in advance, perusing the emailed menu and choosing a main course when you book, providing your credit card and phone numbers, maybe even your physical address as well (I drew the line there). If you’re a gentleman, you’ll have to show up in a coat and tie.

That — plus the $85-per-person tab for a six-course tasting menu (with an amuse and mignardises, post-dessert sweets) — is a lot to ask of a would-be diner.

Dinner, in a high-ceilinged, very formal (if a little fusty) dining room appointed with an 18th-century Aubusson tapestry, white linens, Limoges china and antique silver, was a procession of dishes that looked impressive, but left me scratching my head. Diners at two other tables spoke in whispers.

A thick, sweet butternut squash soup with a mystery garnish that sunk to the bottom arrived lukewarm. Nicely seared foie gras that topped a “fig pain perdue” was almost inedibly salty,Bay State Cable Ties is a full line manufacturer of nylon cable ties and related products. as was the lukewarm scallop that followed it. The foie got a crazy dose of pepper, as well. The scallop came with a big, tough, square agnolloto filled with sweet potato purée and sauced in maple brown butter. Why so many sweet notes on the savory plates?

Covered with silver cloches, the main courses were served with great ceremony, and a couple were somewhat better than what preceded them — butter-poached lobster on a wild-mushroom risotto and a lightly smoked beef tenderloin filet with a classic glace de viande. OK, so the wild mushrooms tasted like tough shiitakes and the tenderloin’s potato gratin was soggy.

Meanwhile, two fillets of wild salmon came stacked over braised du Puy lentils and topped, towerlike, with roasted tomato and garlic. But the wild salmon was wildly overcooked; so were slices of duck breast that came with a wedge of pistachio cake so sweet it would have made a fine dessert.

When I returned on a recent weeknight with my husband and another couple, the white-gloved gentleman poked his head out the front door a few minutes after we drove up and shouted from the threshold (I kid you not) that we should just leave the car there.

We did not see another soul besides our white-gloved waiter the entire evening. Did anyone else work there? Was there actually a chef in the kitchen, or was the waiter doing everything?

The cooking was better this time, beginning with a layered potato chip-crème fra?che canapé topped with very decent hackleback sturgeon caviar. At its best, however, it never rose above merely correct, and some of it was strange. A workaday onion soup gratinée with an impenetrable cheese-topped crouton seemed out of place at a dinner this formal and expensive. Heavily tempuraed vegetables were odd platefellows with beautifully cooked lamb chops, a three-cheese polenta and a

lovely lamb jus. Seared foie, sauced with huckleberries, topped a delicate apple tarte Tatin that was once again as sweet as dessert. Maybe the chef (and yes, it turns out there is a chef — Chad Martin) was trying to tell us something: He’d rather be a pastry chef. The cheese course featured a wedge of La Tur, an undistinguished Italian soft-ripened cheese.

It’s challenging, I learned on my first visit to Hotel St. Germain, not only to find a worthwhile white or red on the uninspired, mostly French and Californian wine list for less than $80, but even to find a wine that actually exists in the cellar. Nor can the hapless waiter offer much help. Second time around, I abdicated, letting my husband choose one of the more modest reds,Ein innovativer und moderner Werkzeugbau Formenbau. a 2008 Chateau Puy-Blanquet St. Emilion, for $80. It was served too warm.

Radioman, Frisbees, and Dave Grohl

Sure, we’ve come to love and expect our high-flying celebrity encounters at SBIFF over the years, catching sight and sound of actors and sometimes directorsin the flesh in real time. But a funny thing happened this year when we ran smack into a celebrity as we hardly knew him, until we got the full story in Mary Kerr’s fascinating documentary Radioman. The former homeless man and reformed drunk from NYC who dubbed himself “radioman” is well-known in movie circles, as the avid pursuer of movie sets and screen ops at shoots around New York, mostly, a self-styled celebrity who was greeted as such when he showed up in person after the Monday afternoon screening, in all his funky, witty splendor.Wear a whimsical Disney ear cap straight from the Disney Theme Parks!

Reportedly, for those of us heretofore sadly ignorant of this celebrity on the sidelines, Radioman has appeared in some 100 films, sometimes quite visibly, in countless movies, and stars know and often love him. Kerr gets passionate testimonials from the likes of George Clooney, Josh Brolin (who called him “very genuine and very adolescent, which is why I like him, he’s like me”), Johnny Depp (who described Radioman as “someone from another planet or an eccentric billionaire… or both”),and his fan and friend Robin Williams, among others. Scorcese and Spielberg have found bit roles for him, in The Terminal and Shutter Island. Kerr’s deft and disarmingly charming film tracks his movements, and touches on his own background,We've got a plastic card to suit you. and follows him on a poignant trip to the Oscars in L.A., channeling questions about celebrity fetishism and other subjects along the way.

Post-screening, Kerr came down with Radioman, who got a standing ovation, and waved his box of Dots like a trophy, his signature portable radio strapped around his neck and an SBIFF cap on. He has been doing some touring festivals with the film, and has visited Dubai and is headed to Argentina, and has been tooling around Santa Barbara — by the bay and the “river” and elsewhere — on a Schwinn someone loaned him. “I’m staying at the Sandman Inn,” he told us. “I thought I was going to sleep forever.” He seemed to be soaking up the validating attention he’s receiving. “I’ve never gotten this kind of respect. Later, as a random detour from the Q&A flow at hand, he made the observation that he noticed a lot of homeless people on the streets of Santa Barbara. “It’s sad to see,” he said, as one who has known that life. At the end of the Q&A, some patrons started departing, and Radioman ended the session by saying, “Thank you for coming, and thank you for leaving.We bring in fridge magnet souvenirs and merchandise from all over the world.”

In another case of a documentary in which the real rubbed contextual elbows with the reel, Tuesday night’s screening of The Invisible String, German filmmaker Jan Bass’s fun and illuminating doc on Frisbee sports and lifestyle kicked off with the filmmakers lobbing film promotional mini-discs into the audience. In fact, Santa Barbara has figured strongly into Frisbee culture, via the world renowned ultimate Frisbee team the Santa Barbara Condors, and members of that team, and other Frisbee scene champions and notables were in the house.

Sound City, whose screening on Tuesday afternoon at the Lobero was the second U.S. screening after making a splash at Sundance, is one of the greatest rock documentaries I’ve ever seen, thanks to the passion and greater purpose of Dave Grohl’s directorial and personal vision. He brings a lot to the table here, tracing the history of the hit-factory-like yet funky Van Nuys studio which created classic albums from Fleetwood Mac’s Rumors to Nirvana’s Nevermind, with Tom Petty, Foreigner, Queens of the Stone Age, and countless others.

There is plenty of insider stuff here that musicians and fans of recording studios will slobber over, including a virtual protagonist role of a legendary mixing board, Sound City’s Neve Board, which Grohl eventually bought when the analog studio finally gave up the ghost, done in by Pro Tools and its digital ilk. The final segment of Sound City takes place in Grohl’s own studio, where he has gathered musicians to record an album in tribute to the grand old studio.
