The fire at an OmniSource Southeast metal recycling plant shut down part of North Gossett Street off Old Williamston Road in Anderson around mid-day Tuesday. The road reopened after a few hours.
Firefighters put on full gear, with breathing masks, in the hot weather because they say they did not know exactly what types of materials were in the pile of scrap yard debris. It turned out to be nothing dangerous, but the scrap yard was filled with things like tires that dry up and catch fire faster in the heat.

A pile of scrap that was about 25 feet tall caught fire at the recycling plant Tuesday.
Firefighters say it wasn't just the metal in the pile that caused the blaze to spread so quickly.
Anderson Fire Chief Dale Horne says, "Once the tires and all that get ignited of course the temperature gets high enough where it can burn the metal."
Horne says the extreme temperatures dried up the foam, rubber from the tires, and other materials mixed in with the metal pile. He says the heat turned what would normally be a small fire into one that sent smoke billowing dozens of feet in the air. Horne adds, "A trash fire can usually be a trash can on fire.The newest Piles is incontrovertibly a step up from last year's model, At this location, handling all the materials, we're used to it being a major fire."
Firefighters say workers at the recycling plant helped them battle the flames by using a crane with a claw that helped separate the piles of debris. Horne says, "The piles were so big that the scrap yard was separating them for us."
Cromer says the fire started when a contract company, not affiliated with OmniSource, was using a torch to cut through steel and remove a piece of equipment. He says, "A spark got into a scrap pile and escalated from a 3 foot fire to a good size fire."
Cromer says crews will now change the way they're doing things.All oil painting reproduction products are compiled of backing, He says, "They (the contract company) decided just to chip it out (using an air hammer) rather than cut (using a torch) anymore down there."

There are no estimates on how much damage was done in the fire. Chief Horne says the fire appears to be accidental. Horne says OmniSource has the permits it needs for the work being done.
It took 16 firefighters to get the fire under control. No one was injured.
