Monsignor Stephen McHenry, the church's pastor, came up with the idea for the mosaic while visiting a patient at Abington Memorial Hospital. "I was really impressed with that," McHenry said. The idea was turned over to the church's Youth and Family Commission, which has organized the project.
The church has been selling 6-inch square tiles. Parishioners can purchase a square for $15 and paint it themselves, purchase one for $20 and have it painted for them or purchase one with a heart-shaped cutout for $20. The heart-shaped cutouts will be turned into refrigerator magnets that families can have, keeping a piece of the church with them at home.
All of the proceeds will benefit the St. Anthony's Youth program.
So far, hundreds parishioners have signed up to have a piece of their heart featured in the mosaic. The wall can accommodate approximately 500 tiles, and the church already has received orders for approximately 250, according to McHenry.
The tiles have been glazed and fired by The Mudshack in North Wales.
Many have chosen to paint the tiles themselves, creating them with their own designs and featuring the names of family members and loved ones. "It's just been wonderful," said McHenry, who painted a tile himself and noted parishioners have embraced the idea.
The church plans to install the mosaic in the spring as its 125th anniversary year wraps up in April, according to McHenry.
The final product will be approximately 6 to 7 feet high and wide, with the saying "Where heart speaks to heart" at the center of the mosaic.
"I just like the creativity," McHenry said, noting no two tiles will be alike.
