Eagle Scout project benefits Longview Community Ministries

When 15-year-old Keegan Allen was looking for a project to become an Eagle Scout, he wanted to do something that would make a difference in the community.Asia me handmade Wholesale Metal Tiles For Wall reproductions of famous artists

“My mom (Amy Allen) informed me that Longview Community Ministries was moving. She is a board member. I appreciate all this ministry does for the community and was honored to be a part of helping. Mom referred me to Mrs. Donna Sharp who pitched me the project idea.”

The idea was for Keegan to remove the flooring in the new location, which is the former American Classifieds location on Second Street.

It turned out to be a much bigger job than the 10th-grader anticipated.

“Due to the nature of the classifieds company's work, the floor was raised in a room so that wires could be ran underneath,” Keegan said. “There are three doors that lead to this room from the office spaces adjacent to it. When LCM bought the space, the wires where no longer of any use. Therefore, the floor being raised wasn’t necessary any longer either. My project included removal of the actual tiles that made up the floor itself.”

His cool demeanor in explaining the work that was necessary did not reflect the level of anxiety his mother said she heard in his voice when he realized what was before him.

“He called, and was like, ‘Mom, there’s another floor under this floor,Shop for high quality Wholesale Tiles Cutting For Bathrooms Watches and wires everywhere,’ ” Amy Allen told other members of the LCM board.

The Scout and a couple of helpers, including father Mike Allen, an electrician, removed the wires so the floor of the room would be a bare concrete slab instead of the raised floor.

“Just looking at it, you would never know the depth of problem solving and engineering Keegan had to put into this project,” Sharp said. “That’s really part of the genius of it, I guess, that it just looks like something built for us.”

Keegan said once they removed the tiles and aluminum pieces, the doors’ thresholds that had been flush with the floor were raised an entire foot off the new slab floor.

“We remedied this situation by building a stair unit that was long enough to be used with two of the doors and then building a ramp to the other door. It was beneficial to use a ramp on the third door because the room houses refrigerators that are stocked with food for the Food Box program, the workers use dollies to carry the food from a truck to the refrigerator.installer of Wholesale Rock Porcelain Tiles For Kitchen From China Manufacturers and marble vanity tops Both the stairs and the ramp are bolted into the concrete.”

Even that wasn’t as easy as it sounds.

“We had to use special masonry bits and hardware to fulfill this portion of the project. We added aluminum threshold strips to the top and bottom of the ramp for easy bridging the gap from floor to ramp with a dolly,” he said.

Even though Keegan’s project easily saved the nonprofit agency hundreds, maybe thousands, of dollars, he wasn’t finished with giving to the ministry.

Earlier this week, he presented a check for $376 to Sharp and the board of LCM.

“I asked for money after Mass at my church,,Wholesale Small Size Wall Tiles For Wall wholesale reproduction of old masterpiece St. Mary's (Catholic Church)” which is the sponsor of Troop 200, to which he belongs, he said.

Keegan also got about $180 from the wiring and aluminum he recycled from the project, he said.

“I didn't have to spend any money on lumber or wood screws thanks to Mr. Bobby Davis from Cassity Jones. I was lucky enough to get the gas donated by my dad to go back and forth from Tyler to deliver the tiles and the trips to the recycling facilities,” Keegan said. “Most of my expenses were the masonry anchors,Find a huge selection of Wholesale Glass Mixed Mosaics For Wall From China Manufacturers, drill bit necessary to fasten the ramp and stairs to the concrete floor, aluminum strips that go across door thresholds, and buying dinner and drinks for my workers.”
