We would have paid a good bit of money for this unique wine-tasting experience but we didn't have to -- it was free. Numerous wines from three different regions of Portugal are on offer each month, and you can select up to a total of four of them to taste. There were even some sparkling wines available. The samples are healthy servings.

No visit is complete without listening to Fado, the unique music of the city. A visit to the Fado Museum will give you a glimmer of the music, and the history of Fado that began in the second half of the 19th century in the narrow streets of the poorer neighborhoods. The singer accompanied by guitars sang mostly sad songs about urban life. Today there are often happier songs so you don't need boxes of Kleenex, but you do need to attend one. There are many Fado houses, mainly in Alfama or Bairro Alto. The narrow cobbled streets of Bairro Alto brags it has the most bars.

No Accident: Westray 20 Years After

An early morning ceremony to remember the twentieth anniversary of the Westray mine disaster today paid respect to the 26 coal miners killed in the coal dust-sparked methane blast.

More than that though, it raised the difficult question of whether these preventable deaths have at all re-shaped the notion of safety in the workplace.

Westray retains a vital segment of the collective social consciousness, at once because it represents a cataclysmic, and unnecessary, disaster, and because it is a classic example of corporate profits taking complete and utter precedence over safety.

To Ken Georgetti, President of the Canadian Labour Congress (CLC), it is a question of a collective psychological re-tooling. While the legal ability to hold a corporation criminally accountable theoretically exists, it requires an as-yet untapped popular momentum to make it stick.

Georgetti sees reclaiming the word “accident” as being of particular importance to this initiative. To this effect, the CLC has prepared a new set of pamphlets meant to educate police and prosecutors on investigating and analyzing so-called accident scenes.

“[The CLC] think[s] the mentality should be that anytime a death occurs the police should investigate it as a crime scene primarily and then determine whether or not the death was accidental, rather than just assume that because it's a workplace death that it's accidental,” says Georgetti. “That's the problem, because the presumption always is that it's an accident, and accidents imply 'no fault'.

“Our compensation system was set up so that no blame would be laid in accidents and people would be properly compensated, and at the same time people wouldn't be fearful of the truth to prevent the accident from happening. Until this mass awakening takes place, it seemingly falls to unions to provide a collective voice to workers, especially in potentially dangerous work environments. Ken Neumann, National Director of the United Steel Workers, and on hand at the memorial, remembers the instance well. Neumann agrees with Georgetti that a social shift is needed to hold corporations legally responsible for worker deaths.

“I truly believe, from my perspective, that some of it has to do with a culture shift. For years and years people looked at health and safety as being regulatory. So when you have the police or the attorney general, when you have a crime scene, when you have a shooting, they rope it off. They investigate it like it's a true crime. And I think that's the mentality shift [that is needed]. We're going to ask the federal government, along with the provincial governments and attorney generals, to provide further education, and to basically have some political will.

Ancient Wonders still amaze

Several years ago, I wrote a couple of columns about the Seven Wonders of the Columbia World. I described a group of curious local buildings and landmarks, which I designated as "Wonders" because I figured any stranger who might happen upon them for the first time would be immediately rendered so bewildered he would stop dead in his tracks and exclaim, "I wonder what sort of lunatic thought that would be a good idea," or "I wonder how much money they wasted on that thing."

Such is the volatile and fluid nature of wonders as they exist in today's world. Lampooned and ridiculed one day, nothing but a twisted memory the next. This got me thinking about some of the long-forgotten places of our city's past that once served so proudly as true beacons of the bizarre but that now, for better or worse, have gone the way of the dodo bird. Neil’s wood inspiration leads to links with India

A BEXHILL man is hoping to carve a niche for himself in the world of home design – by launching a furniture business with ‘master craftsman’ values.

Neil Buckley-Jensen, 35, (pictured) is the first to admit he is “obsessed” with wood and is always on the look out for discarded pieces to ‘upcycle’ into new wares.

And he is so committed to hand-tooling each piece he has forged links with an Indian factory to turn out wardrobes and tables made from old church pews and fishing boats.

The dad-of-one, who has set up a website for his Little Tree Furniture company, reckons he is on the cusp of a revolution in the way we think about our living spaces.

It was while renovating the property – involving a lot of work with wooden beams – that an idea was sparked.

Neil, who works as a pharmaceuticals professional in his day job, then attended a government-run ‘business link’ scheme which helped get his firm off the ground.

But he soon realised he needed a unique selling point to give him the advantage in a crowded market.

So he began accompanying air stewardess wife Aimee on long haul flights to India to search for inspiration.

He added: “We met when we were both working for the same airline. I wasn’t very good at being a trolley dolly. I think I only lasted six months.

“But we ended up staying in Goa for a while and I was introduced to some guys who worked at a furniture manufacturing yard. It only had a couple of machines and about 10 carpenters but the stuff they were churning out was amazing.”

After striking a deal with the owner, Shazad Sayed, he started to import individual pieces to the UK.

But demand quickly began to exceed the tooling company’s modest capabilities and Neil was advised to travel north to the arid deserts of Rajasthan.

After several “adventures”, including one where he nearly died when an over-excitable cabbie ploughed into a ditch, Neil secured a host of regular suppliers.

He said: “I’ve managed to set up links with three different outlets and they manufacture the pieces.

“It’s been absolutely fantastic as I’m really into reclaiming old bits of wood. We’ve got furniture made from old churches, buildings and railway sleepers.

“And we’ve got a range coming soon that is entirely made from old fishing boats. It’s so colourful and characterful.”

Neil has also factored in a bit of charity work to help local village schools after visiting the area six times in the last few years.

He is sponsoring local children to pay for their studies and wants to install 300 generators to keep vital air conditioning working during frequent power cuts.

He said: “The lights and air con just go down whenever the power fails. You have kids passing out because of the heat. So I really want to put generators in the schools otherwise the kids are missing out on learning.

“Our business is family focused so I just wanted to translate that into what we do in the community as well.”

IBM adds search and broadens Hadoop strategy with Big Data

The two announcements give serious credibility to its Big Data offerings and its Smarter Planet initiatives. Big Data analytics differs from traditional analytics, which tell the user “what” has happened from a subset of normalized information, by providing the ability to explore much larger data sets to get a better, more reliable picture of what is happening and why. By definition, one of the major problems in discovering the information “nuggets” in Big Data environments is that the volume of data is large and consequently difficult to traverse or search using traditional enterprise search and retrieval (ESR) tools that require the creation and maintenance of indexes before a query can be made. Vivisimo’s offering indexes and clusters results in real time, and its scalability enables dynamic navigation across results delivered, as well as the automation of discovery, reducing the burden/time of analysis.

Despite its small size, privately held Vivisimo, which was founded in 2000 by researchers at Carnegie Mellon University, brings with it a very credible 140-strong customer base including Europe’s Airbus, LexisNexis,We offer the best Ventilation system. and the US Air Force, with the software also used by the USA.gov website. The acquisition also validates Ovum’s prediction in its 2012 Trends to Watch analysis that vendors would invest in tooling to help organizations navigate Big Data.

With this release, IBM’s positioning is clearer. It will support the Hadoop distributions that have hit critical mass demand from its customer base. The market is clearly voting in favor of the core Apache Hadoop distribution over proprietary alternatives. EMC offers the MapR proprietary file system alternative to HDFS, while IBM has spoken of future potential with its own GPFS counterpart. However, both position the core Apache distribution as the mainstream option, with proprietary alternatives targeted at special high-end, higher-performance use-cases.

The fly in the ointment is that while the Apache distribution has become the default option for the market, the Hadoop project has so many sub-projects dedicated around individual components that it can be difficult to see the wood for the trees. The Apache Hadoop community is still struggling to define which components will become the de facto “kernel” of Hadoop. Nonetheless, while the market has voted in favor of the Apache distribution, this still leaves opportunity for innovations for specialized add-ons above the core open-source stack.

Solar-powered Catamaran Completes Record-setting Circumnavigation

Turanor PlanetSolar, a futuristic-looking 100-foot catamaran, on Friday became the first vessel to have circumnavigated the planet exclusively on power generated by the sun. The voyage, which began and ended in Monaco, lasted 19-plus months and included layovers in 28 countries, which were designed to promote the importance of solar energy.

PlanetSolar's crew consisted of Switzerland's Domjan, an ambulance driver and high-mountain rescue guide; French captains Erwann Le Rouzic and Patrick Marchesseau; German Bosun Jens Langwasser, and Swiss energy-management specialist Christian Ochsenbein.

For these adventurers, the culmination of such a long adventure -- which began on Sept. 27, 2010 -- enables reunions with families and friends. But the memories of this incredible odyssey will not soon be forgotten.
